A record entry of primary school pupils participated in the Clackmannanshire Primary Schools Cross Country Championships on Tuesday 2 February at the West End Park in Alloa. Over 420 young people from P5, 6, and 7 represented their school and ran the one mile course.
Despite a morning with snow falls and low temperatures, by the afternoon the weather had improved and the young people ran in mud and sunshine!
All 19 primary schools were represented with many bringing whole classes. Most of our primaries have running clubs and many pupils had been practicing for several weeks prior to this event. This event is also a qualifier for the regional primary schools cross country race which will take place on 4 March in Bo'ness.
Helen Finch, chair of the Clackmannanshire Primary Schools Sports Association, said, "The pupils have all done really well. I notice that there are more children here than last year and that many of them have improved their performance. I am looking to hear how our runners representing Clackmannanshire at the regional event get on."
Councillor Bobby McGill, presented the trophies and medals. He said, "It's great to see so many students taking part in a sport that's easy, low cost and makes the most of our beautiful countryside. I'm sure all the participants enjoyed their day and hope they'll keep active in the future. We'd also like to thank all the volunteers who helped the Sports Development team in the set up and organisation of the event."
Anyone interested in developing their running and athletics skills should contact Clackmannanshire Council Sports Development on 01259 450000.
