Stirling and Clackmannanshire Consumer Advisers will be out and about helping young consumers 'Know Your Consumer Rights' during National Consumer Week from September 14 to 18, 2009.

Advisers will be visiting nine local secondary schools to raise awareness on a range of consumer issues that can impact on the young consumer's daily lives. Students will be given help and advice on problems they may be having with goods such as mobile phones, concert tickets or MP3 players.

The 3 key consumer rights highlighted to students will be, that; Goods must be fit for purpose, of satisfactory quality and fit the description given.

Consumer Adviser, Ian Moore said, "A member of the Consumer Advice team will visit a number of secondary schools over the lunchtime period in the Stirling and Clackmannanshire areas during National Consumer Week. They will set up a stall in the public areas, providing students with advice and information on the goods and services that they would routinely buy or use. Many young people have the same spending levels as adults but are not as aware of their consumer rights when things go wrong."

The nine secondary schools to be visited are: St. Mondan's High School on Monday September 14, Bannockburn High School and Queen Victoria Schools' on Tuesday September 15, Stirling High School on Wednesday September 16, Alloa Academy and McLaren High Schools' on Thursday September 17 and Alva Academy on Friday September 18 - other schools taking part are Balfron High and Dunblane High - dates to be confirmed.

Recent research into public understanding of consumer rights has highlighted that although consumers say they are confident about using their rights, the majority of them didn't actually know what their rights were. Those in the 16-24 age range were found to be less confident in dealing with issues and less informed as to what rights they actually had.

Anyone interested in learning more about their consumer rights or wants to discuss their own personal experiences regarding problems with goods such as mobile phones, MP3 players, concert tickets etc should visit the stand and speak to a member of the Consumer Advice Team.

Anyone who does not attend one of the secondary schools being visited can still get advice or assistance on consumer rights by phoning 01786 432170 or by email - tradingstandards@stirling.gov.uk or by visiting our website at stirling.gov.uk/tradingstandards
