Alex Burns, a senior pupil at Alloa Academy and member of the Duke of Edinburgh's Clackmannanshire Open Award Group, has completed his Gold Award Residential Project thanks to the support of Alloa Rotary Club.

The Club sponsored Alex to attend their Rotary Youth Leader Award course at the Abernethy Trust Centre in Inverness-shire.

The object of RYLA is to develop leadership qualities and team working; to give a sense of pride in achievement; to stimulate mind and body; and in doing so to emphasise the importance of sportsmanship, fitness, character and person relationships.

The camp covered the usual outdoor, fun activities such as orienteering, obstacle courses, problem solving tasks, canoeing, climbing, gorge walking plus lectures on leadership and citizenship.

Councillor George Matchett, Portfolio Holder for Inclusion, said: "I would like to thank Alloa Rotary Club for supporting Alex which has allowed him to achieve the residential element of his Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. Alex is a credit to Clackmannanshire."

Sonia Rehman, another senior pupil at Alloa Academy and member of the Duke of Edinburgh's Clackmannanshire Open Award Group, completed the girls version of the camp at Abernethy Trust Centre earlier this month. Both Alex and Sonia will be reporting back to the Rotary Club with a presentation of their experiences of the course.
