Clackmannanshire Council would like to highlight that all residents over 70 are entitled to free loft and cavity wall insulation, through a Government-backed scheme working with energy companies and insulation installers. However, residents should beware of cold-callers offering this service.
There have been reports that a company is canvassing door to door in the area, promising free insulation and then charging once the work is completed. These tactics are known to Energy Saving Scotland Advice Centre with concerns being raised nationwide over such rogue practices.
People have a choice of who they use to install insulation: the Energy Saving Scotland Advice Centre (ESSAC) has a list of reputable schemes and contractors. They can be contacted on 0800 512 012.
Carol Aldred, the Council's Home Energy Officer, said, "In this cold weather and with energy bills rising, it is important that people try to reduce their fuel bills and save money by heating their homes more efficiently. One of the best ways to do this is to make sure homes are properly insulated."
"I am concerned about firms who are using cold call door-to-door canvassers to generate business. This can confuse older and more vulnerable residents. People should shop round for any goods or services that they want, and not use a company just because it has knocked on the door."
If you receive any information from an insulation company, either by a flyer through the door or by a representative of the company canvassing door to door, you can check their reputation by calling ESSAC on 0800 512 012.
Clackmannanshire Council works in partnership with Scottish Gas to provided discounted insulation to all home owners and free installation for those residents over 70. For further information contact ESSAC on 0800 512 012 or Carol Aldred, Home Energy Officer, on 01259 452486.
