Central Scotland Strategic Coordinating Group priorities

The Central Scotland Strategic Co-ordinating Group (SCG), led by Chief Constable Andrew Cameron, is meeting regularly to discuss the ongoing industrial dispute at INEOS, Grangemouth, and the potential impact on our local communities.

SCG partners have a strong track record of collaborative working with the Grangemouth petrochemical industry and are continuing to liaise closely with Government and industry as the situation develops.

Our key priorities are:

  • public safety,
  • reassurance and
  • business continuity.

It is hoped that INEOS and Unite will be able to resolve the current situation at an early date, however until that time SCG partners are taking putting plans in place to ensure that in the event of industrial action our communities will experience minimal inconvenience and the needs of our most vulnerable residents will be met.

Additional flaring

The planned shutdown as part of the proposed industrial action of the INEOS petro-chemical works at Grangemouth is expected to cause additional flaring for the next 48 hours (Wednesday/Thursday 23/24th April 2008).

Flaring often takes place on site as part of the routine shutdown programme to safely disperse of some of the by-products found in the petro-chemical industry.

Falkirk Council and SEPA, as key partners in the Central Scotland Strategic Co-ordinating Group (SCG), are working with INEOS to ensure that disruption to local communities is kept to a minimum.

Members of the public should not be alarmed by this increased activity which is administered under strict safety procedures.

Notes

The purpose of the Central Scotland SCG is to establish and maintain a formal partnership, as required under the Civil Contingencies Act, as an aid to planning for the effective management of response to emergencies.

SCG Members include:
Central Scotland Police; Central Scotland Fire and Rescue Service; Falkirk Council; Stirling Council; Clackmannanshire Council; NHS Forth Valley; Scottish Environment Protection Agency, Scottish Ambulance Service.
