The Council's popular Web 4 U computers are about to be upgraded.

All 44 of the computers, which are in libraries and CAP offices around the county, will be replaced during March.

The free internet service was launched in 2002 and has been a great success allowing hundreds of local people to access the world wide web at no cost.

Once the new computers have been installed, users will have access to a range of new and upgraded software for a range of activities including:

  • web browsing
  • word processing and desk top publishing
  • audio and image editing
  • webpage creation
  • the ability to play DVDs
  • download digital photos from camera and phone memory cards

And with a DVD writer built into every computer, there will be the potential to put those files onto a blank CD or DVD. Users will also be able to print out in colour to any one of the new laser printers being installed at each site, improving on the old system's printing capabilities.

As the whole system is being replaced the Web 4 U system will not be available while the upgrade is taking place. It is anticipated that the improved system will be back up and running by the end of the month.

John Blake, Library Services Team Leader, said: "The Web 4 U computers are very popular with library users and the scheme has been a great success story. We anticipate that the new computers will be even more popular."
