Revamped school meals are on the menu

A change is on the menu in Clackmannanshire's primary school dining halls.

Thank to Class Cuisine, the Council's centralised state-of-the-art cook/freeze unit in Sauchie, delicious and nutritionally balanced meals continue to be served up in the county's schools daily.

Now two years after Class Cuisine opened the menus have undergone a revamp in response to extensive consultation with our schools and taking pupils' views about school lunches on board.

When pupils go back to school after the autumn break on Monday 15th October they will be offered a three-course lunch for just £1.60 - the same price as an old two-course meal. This change is possible because the menu has been streamlined to offer meals that we know from experience our pupils enjoy. This will also reduce food waste.

The weekly menus are analysed to ensure all meals have a healthy balance of nutrients and are low in fat, sugar and salt.

Schools Health Development Officer Betsy Twelves-Dickson said: "We've listened to the feedback from the dining halls and have made these changes while still working within the national nutritional guidelines. I think one of the most popular changes will be the daily starter of delicious, homemade soup. Nothing is more warming during the winter months and it's a great way to get children to eat a selection of veg! We are also reintroducing the monthly 'special theme days' such as St Andrews Day and a Burns Day."

A menu selector booklet will be issued to every pupil to take home before the holidays so that parents/carers can see the choices on offer. The menu changes every day and runs in a four-week cycle.

There is always be a vegetarian option available and a selection of fresh bread, water and semi-skimmed milk is available every day and is included in the price.

Further changes to the menu will be introduced next spring following an extensive round of further consultation with staff, pupils and parents at the county's 19 primary schools over the past few weeks.
