Rugby in Schools

In Clackmannanshire we start them young, and most children can experience rugby in their local nursery.

Specially trained staff deliver a nursery specific rugby programme which develops fundamental functional movement skills.

Tag rugby

In all primary schools, tag rugby is taught to P5 as part of the PE curriculum.

Tag rugby is a non-contact form of the sport, which encourages both boys and girls to develop their rugby skills within a safe and fun environment. The schools play 2 times a year in their cluster tag rugby festivals held at both the local rugby clubs.

Touch Rugby

In P7 Tartan Touch Rugby is taught where some physical contact is introduced and uncontested lineouts and scrums are taught, with a P7 festival between all local primary schools held at the end of the 6 week training block.

Contact Rugby

There are a number of after school rugby clubs for P4 - P7 age groups in the Alva, Lornshill and Alloa clusters where they are coached the contact aspects of rugby by specialist rugby coaches.

School of Rugby

There are now school of rugby programmes in all 3 of our secondary schools, which provide the opportunity for 20 first year pupils to have 4/5 rugby sessions a week, 3 during curriculum time, 1 lunch time and 1 after school session.

The programme runs for 2 years and is funded by the Government's Cash back Scheme in conjunction with Scottish Rugby and the Council.
