We consult with tenants every year about potential rent increases. We believe that this is an important decision for you to think about as a Council tenant.
This year will be slightly different though with the introduction of The Cost of Living (Tenant Protection) (Scotland) Bill which allows the Scottish Government to impose a rent freeze or rent cap. We wont know what they intend to do until January next year, in the meantime the Scottish Housing Regulator has advised that we should consult with you as normal.
We normally use the September inflation figure as the basis for our rent rise. This year that was 10.1%. We know that a rise of that size would be totally unaffordable and we have been working hard to keep rents down. Last years increase matched inflation, the year before we froze rents.
The Housing Service is facing increased costs particularly for materials and in order to meet the Scottish Government's climate change targets. So, we do need to consider increasing rents to sustain services and support investment. We are proposing either a 3% increase with some reduction in investment next year, or a 5% rise without any changes in the short term.
We appreciate that the cost of living crisis is something that will affect all of our tenants in the coming months, if you are struggling to pay your rent please get in touch with your Housing Officer to see if they can help.
