Speed Limits

Speed Limits

A map showing the speed limits in Clackmannanshire is available.

Clackmannanshire Council uses national speed limit guidance to set speed limits on all the roads within Clackmannanshire. A number of factors are taken into account when setting speed limits. These include:

  • existing speeds
  • traffic volume
  • the surrounding environment
  • road safety

20 mph limits

20 mph limits are predominantly used in urban areas - at schools, in town centres or within residential areas.
There are signs at the entry points and smaller repeater signs throughout the limit area.

20 mph zones

20 mph zones are predominantly used in urban areas - at schools, in town centres or within residential areas.

There are signs at the entry points and traffic calming measures designed to reduce traffic speed within the zone. One of the benefits of a zone is that we can reduce the number of signs to limit clutter where appropriate.

There are a number of benefits to implementing 20mph limits and zones:

  • Increases safety levels and reduces the number of accidents
  • Improves the living environment for pedestrians, cyclists and residents
  • Encourages walking and cycling, benefitting the environment and peoples health

These benefits have led to the introduction of our residential 20mph programme. This programme will see 20mph limits/zones introduced on all residential streets within Clackmannanshire.

30 mph limits

30 mph is the standard limit in towns and villages.

Where there is street lighting, the speed limit is 30mph, unless there are signs to indicate a different limit.

40 mph limits

40 mph limits can be used on roads where there are a high number of bends, junctions, accesses, where there is substantial development, where the road has a predominantly local or recreational function or in semi urban areas where the level of development does not meet the criteria for a 30 mph limit.

There are signs at the entry points and smaller repeater signs throughout the limit area.

50 mph limits

50 mph limits can be used on rural roads where there are a high number of bends, junctions or accesses and where the mean speed is already below 50 mph.

There are signs at the entry points and smaller repeater signs throughout the limit area.

National speed limit

The national speed limit for cars and motorcycles is typically 60 mph on single carriageways and 70 mph on dual carriageways and motorways.

Where there is no street lighting, the national speed limit applies, unless there are signs to indicate a different limit.

Walking, Cycling and Riding Friendly Roads

In Clackmannanshire we have introduced a number of walking, cycling and riding friendly roads. These are quieter rural roads where traffic speed and volumes are low.

These roads have specially designed limit signs and aim to remind drivers that they are likely to see walkers, cyclists and horse riders in these locations.

There are signs at the entry points and smaller repeater signs throughout the limit area.

Frequently Asked Questions
