Licence summary


You need a license to operate a caravan site, subject to the exemptions below.

You do not need a caravan or camp site license for the following:

  • A caravan kept within the grounds of a house. To be exempt from needing a licence, the caravan cannot be occupied separately to the house

  • A single caravan sited in the same place for not more than two consecutive nights, up to a maximum of 28 days in any 12 months

  • Up to three caravans on a site of not less than five acres for a maximum of 28 days in any 12 months

  • Sites occupied by exempted organisations such as the Caravan Club

  • Sites of up to five caravans certified by an exempt organisation and which are for members only

Conditions may be attached to a licence.

Application Evaluation Process


When an application is made after 2 months it will be deemed to be made unconditionally until the local authority give notice that the application is refused or conditions are attached.

Will Tacit Consent Apply?


After 2 months. This means that you will be able to act as though your application is granted if you have not heard from the local authority by the end of the period of 2 months.

If an applicant is refused a licence they may appeal to their local Sheriff's court.

A licence holder may appeal against a condition attached to a licence to their local Sheriff's court.
