Indirect Learning (IDL)
Indirect Learning for reading and spelling Difficulties
Indirect Learning or IDL, offers a means of allowing those with dyslexic type difficulties to improve the skills of reading and spelling. The system is computer based and uses a multi-sensory approach with the addition of a strong emphasis on colour, to aid memory. It offers hope to frustrated and anxious parents and a way forward to adults, of any age, who have suffered from years of reading failure.
Indirect Learning is a structured multi-sensory learning system that is adapted to the personal needs of each individual student.
The system was specifically designed to assist those with dyslexic type difficulties. Such difficulties can be auditory (dysphonetic) or visual (dyseidetic) or both (alexic). The programme uses multi-sensory methods and incorporates the use of colour in strengthening the connections necessary to identify sounds, match them to their symbols and read/construct words.
Indirect Learning can improve;
- Reading and spelling ability
- Concentration
- Self-confidence and self-esteem
- Co-ordination
In Clackmannanshire there are currently 40 pupils, ranging in age from 7 to 14 years, using this system in Mainstream Primary and Secondary schools. The system has also been made available in Primary and Secondary Support Services where young people have sometimes become disheartened by reading failure.
