Local Waste Plan
Recycling waste is better for the environment than the alternative of throwing it away to be landfilled.
Landfilling waste is considered the worst environmental option for waste. There are difficulties finding suitable land for disposal sites and the associated pollution issues that can arise, have been linked to the global problem of climate change.
Reducing, reusing and recycling waste minimises this risk and also contributes to the saving of energy and the earths resources.
All councils are set recycling targets by the Scottish Government. These targets have been put in place to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.
- 25% of Municipal Solid Waste to be recycled or composted by 2006
- 30% of Municipal Solid Waste to be recycled or composted by 2008
- 25% of Biodegradable Municipal Waste to be diverted away from landfill by 2010
- 50% of Biodegradable Municipal Waste to be diverted away from landfill by 2013
- 75% of Biodegradable Municipal Waste to be diverted away from landfill by 2020
- 50% of Municipal Solid Waste to be recycled for compost by 2020
To achieve the targets set out by the Scottish Government, councils must introduce waste separation schemes for all households. Consultation with householders across Forth Valley indicated that the current scheme was the preferred option. Full details of the consultation are available in the Forth Valley customer consultation final report.
The facilities that Clackmannanshire Council has recently provided to householders to enable them to recycle more of their waste has led to a significant increase in the recycling rate for Clackmannanshire. It has jumped from 9.3% in 2003/04 to 40% in 2005/06.
In addition to the kerbside scheme for householders Clackmannanshire Council has also provided a range of recycling sites around the county in association with our local partner Alloa Community Enterprises (ACE). Details of these are outlined in our community recycling points page.
