Disposing of Books, DVDs and CDs

Good quality books, DVDs and music CDs can be taken to your local charity shop or placed in a charity bank that is located at Forthbank Recycling Centre, Bowhouse Road, Alloa.

Poor quality books can be recycled in your blue box by separating the paper from the cover. Covers made from cardboard can be recycled in your brown bin. Any plastic coated covers should be disposed of in your green bin.

Large quantities of books for recycling that are unsuitable for charities such as school text books can be recycled through Alloa Community Enterprises.

Recycling DVDs and CDs

CDs and DVDs that come with magazines usually have an address printed somewhere within the magazine that you can send them to for recycling. Alternatively an internet search will reveal a number of companies who will recycle CDs and DVDs.

Remember CDs and DVDs that contain personal data should have their contents deleted before disposal.

What happens to your CDs?

As anyone who's ever tried to break a CD will know, they're verging on indestructible, which means left unchecked they'll sit in landfill sites forever. However, CDs and the like can be recycled, through the extraction of the polycarbonate and aluminium content for the use in the manufacture of new components using hard plastics and metals.
