Summer Cicada

What is the Summer Cicada?

The Summer Cicada is a pilot project for Clackmannanshire where for two months during the summer, July and August, new graduates/students of arts will be invited to join our programme of activity.

Cicadas 2008

  • Stuart Carey, Glasgow School of Art - Ceramics
  • Peter Kiernan, Glasgow School of Art - Ceramics

Selection Process

Graduates are chosen from students who have in some way worked with Cultural and Community Services through the previous year. These students have contributed through their degree course work designed in partnership with the Council's cultural service providers and have

  • carried out research of the area;
  • designed and taken part in public art initiatives;
  • worked with tutors on development of project work for the area or in the structure of outdoor/ public events.

Tutors of Glasgow School of Art as this year's major Higher Institution partner worked on selection for 2008 with Clackmannanshire's Cultural Planner.

Both Stuart and Peter were winners of a Public Art competition held by the Council on behalf of Carronvale Homes in 2007. During this process they showed outstanding commitment as they worked alongside international tutor and visiting artist to Scotland, Sandor Dobany.

Why Students, why Clackmannanshire, why clay?

Clackmannanshire's Cultural Programme is creating a foundation for partnership and exploration of the arts and creative practice that is based on an idea of revitalising in a contemporary way the artisan industry for which the region was once known.

A rich heritage of glass making, pottery, silver mines and textile production have been at the core of development within Cultural Planning over recent years. Currently many artists are carrying out work as part of our overall cultural development in all these areas.

Students are a key part to change and vitality in the area as Clackmannanshire becomes increasingly known as an area in which higher educational research is taken very seriously.

Live research projects of various styles are emerging through partnerships with the council and top art institutions that not only seek to inform and inspire a new creative industry in the area, but also bring Scotland's talent of tomorrow here today!
