Sport is Scotland's national pastime, and Clackmannanshire is no different. From indoor and outdoor bowling to skiing, cricket, rugby and of course football, sports are a popular choice for local people.

Sports Development

The Council has one of the most highly regarded sports development functions in Scotland.

Our Sports Development team delivers programmes to children and young people as well as working with older children and adults to develop their training and skills using physical activity and sport.

For more information visit the Sports Development section of this site.

Cricket

Clackmannan County Cricket Club which was established circ 1868 is based at the Arns on the outskirts of Alloa, and anyone interested in cricket, either watching or playing is welcome along.

For more information and contact details, you can visit Clackmannan County Cricket Club's website which contains a host of information such as

  • Fixtures;

  • Social events.

Golf

Clackmannanshire boasts six golf clubs, each offering a different challenge, with something for the beginner to the scratch handicapper. All of these clubs welcome visitors and members alike. For more information, you can view or download Clackmannanshire Tourism Association's (CTA) Golfing in and around Clackmannanshire leaflet.

Football

Football has a proud tradition in Clackmannanshire. One of its most famous sons is player-turned pundit Alan Hanson, who started his career with Sauchie Juniors.

The local team is Alloa Athletic FC, which was founded in 1878 before joining the league in 1921.

The team has played at its Recreation Park grounds since 1895, and during that time has enjoyed memorable victories – and the occasional loss. Nick-named the Wasps because of their distinctive black and gold striped strips, their biggest recent victory was lifting the Challenge Cup in 1999. Their victory came after a nail-biting penalty shoot out in extra time, against Inverness Calley Thistle. The team currently play in Division Two under the management of Tom Hendrie.

Rugby

Hillfoots Rugby Club is based in the village of Tillicoultry and play their games on the public park adjacent to the Clubhouse. The Club has teams from primary 4 to senior levels. The 1st team play in National League Division 1, whilst the 2nd XV play in the Inter City Leagues.

The Club has a large contingent of SRU qualified coaches to cater for all the differing age groups. Training takes place at 6.45 pm on Tuesday and Thursday evenings for the Seniors and U 16's and Saturday Mornings 9.00 am for Juniors. The Clubhouse is friendly and very much family orientated, and serves a good selection beer and beverages. The Club and its members are always on the look out for new members both young and old, playing or non playing, so don't be afraid to come and join.

Alloa Rugby Club, founded in 1930, is based at Earlsfield, in South East Alloa, not far from Alloa Tower, and the clubhouse, and grounds, look out to Clackmannan Tower.

The Club has teams from P4 to senior level. The 1st XV plays in National League Division 5 Caledonia A, and the 2nd XV in the Midlands League. Senior matches are mainly played on Saturdays, as are Under 18 matches. The Minis, and S1 to S3s, play on Sundays.

Senior, and U18s training is at 7pm, on Tuesdays, and Thursdays. The U 16s, and the younger age groups, train on Sunday mornings. All age groups have SRU qualified coaches.

The club has extensive grounds, which are used for a variety of recreational activities, and a spacious, attractive clubhouse, which is extensively used by members, and friends, for socialising, and for functions. All are welcome, players and social members, so why not come along, and join in the fun.

Skiing

Fancy a tubing party? Believe it or not this is just one of the great activities on offer at Firpark Ski Centre in Tillicoultry. Children from as young as four can slide down the slopes on the tubes, like the inner tube of a tyre. This thrilling version of sledging is hugely popular and bookings can be made for up to 30 children.

The centre also has recreational skiing, lessons for children and adults looking to learn to ski or improve their skills, and classes for people with special needs. Group bookings are also available.

If two skis dont do it for you, then snowboarding is available for anyone over age 11.

The artificial ski slope has been designed as a teaching slope and skiiing and snowboarding classes take place throughout the year.
There is no upper age llimit but young children must be school-aged.

Private lessons on a one-to-one basis are available and technicians are on hand to offer advice with any queries you may have.
The centre is open 9am to 9pm Monday to Friday (9am to 2pm for bookings) and 9am to 7pm Saturday, 9am to 4pm Sunday.
