Clackmannanshire Archives

Clackmannanshire Archives & Local History Service will be closed from Tuesday 26th March and will reopen on Tuesday 2nd April. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.
Clackmannanshire Archives & Local History Service took us on a digital tour of the county 100 years ago as part of Doors Open Days 2021, which you can view via Facebook.

Clackmannanshire Archives cares for and provides access to the historical records relating to the county. Many of these records were previously held by the Central Region Archives Department at Stirling.

Our archive contains the records of the former County of Clackmannan, Clackmannan District, the old Alloa, Alva, Dollar and Tillicoultry burghs and the Alloa and Hillfoots district councils.

Within these holdings there are major runs of material such as local authority minutes, letter books, school log books and Valuation and Assessment Rolls.

As well as local government records, the repository also contains a number of private deposits of material from local organisations, families, individuals and businesses. There is a substantial body of material from the former Patons & Baldwins textile operation and the Johnstone of Alva estate papers is another major collection.

The archive collections were moved into the Speirs Centre in Alloa in 2017, providing quicker and easier access to Clackmannanshire’s historical records. You can also search our online archive catalogue 'ClacksPast' by following the link at the bottom of this page.

The archive enquiry service also provides access to the Local History collections:

  • Books
  • Pamphlets
  • Maps
  • Photographs and slides
  • Local newspapers
  • 1841-1901 Census Enumerators' books on microfilm

Clackmannanshire Archives & Local History Service is currently open Monday to Friday from 9:30am to 12:30pm and 1:30pm to 4:30pm.
