Local people are being asked to support a new recycling initiative which could see tonnes of paper, cans, glass and textiles avoid the wheelie bin.

To make it easier for local people to recycle these items blue plastic boxes and blue bags will be delivered to houses throughout Clackmannanshire.

This is the start of the Council's Kerbside Recycling Trial and all householders who receive a box are encouraged to take part in the scheme. Full instructions on how to use the box and bags are included in the pack with the first collection day a fortnight after the delivery of the box.

A photocall opportunity will be available to launch the Kerbside Recycling Trial on Monday 3 September at 12.30pm at the Recycling Centre at Bruce Street in Alloa. Councillor Willie Alexander and Councillor Donald Balsillie from the Enterprise and Environment Committee will both help launch the new scheme.

Councillor Willie Alexander, the Convenor of the Council's Enterprise and Environment Committee said: "This is the largest waste management project in Clackmannanshire since the introduction of wheeled bins in 1994. We hope to extend the trial to all suitable houses in the County as soon as possible. Please take the time to read the material and participate in the scheme. Your environment needs you to wise up to waste - to reduce, reuse and recycle!".

For householders not in the first 10,000 bags will be made available free at the Customer Access Points throughout the County to help with the collection and storage of material for recycling and to help with the transport to the bottle bank and paper bank sites again throughout the area.

Tony Cassidy, the Manager of Alloa Community Enterprises - Ecosavers, who will be carrying out the collections said: "The trial will help protect the environment, save money on waste disposal and create jobs in Clackmannanshire. Please follow the simple instructions on the leaflet and note the collections days on the calendar provided. If you have any problems contact the Freephone Elsa number 0500 545 540 for help and advice".

From Monday 10th September 2001 10,000 blue plastic boxes and blue bags will be delivered.

Together lets try to make Clackmannanshire a waste free zone - box clever - wise up to waste!
