Congratulations go to S3 Technological Studies pupils at Alva Academy who took first and second place in one of the main events at the Sci Tech Challenge, an inter-school competition organised by Careers Scotland.

A total of 26 teams from schools in Falkirk, Stirling, West Lothian and Clackmannanshire took part in the competition which was held at Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh.

Councillor Bobby McGill, the Council's education spokesman, said: "I am delighted to hear that pupils from Alva are excited by science and my congratulations go to these children who have done themselves and their school proud.

"A smart and successful Scotland will depend on a skilled science and engineering work force, and I hope these pupils will continue to be inspired in this field of study."

The pupils have won for their whole year group a visit to the school from the Glasgow Science and Technology Centre Roadshow. This will take place early in 2006. They will also receive a 'Determined to Succeed' certificate celebrating their success in this enterprise event.

The winning Alva pupils were:

Ralph Norman

Andrew Barker

Angus Williamson

Lee Wilson

Daniel Rule

Andrew Greenhill

Neil Cochrane

Ruairidh MacDonald

Callum Forbes

Scott Thomson

Christie Scott

Kamran Sarwar

Three teams from Lornshill Academy also took part in the Sci Tech Challenge. They came a close third in the bridge building category and according to the teacher who accompanied them, Martin Halliday, taking part opened their eyes to the potential of Technological Studies and its close link with physics.
