Breakfast Service Expanded

We all know how difficult it can be to make time for breakfast in the morning. But for children in particular, having a good breakfast is really important.

Now it is even easier for more children in Clackmannanshire to enjoy a healthy start to the day with their friends with a further three schools joining the growing list of primaries providing a breakfast service.

St Mungo's, St Serf's and Fishcross coming on board brings the number of primary schools who have a breakfast service to nine, as well as in the Council's Behaviour Support Service.

You are invited to send a photographer to the launch of the new breakfast service at St Serf's Primary School on Thursday 25th August at 8.30am.

Research shows that children who eat breakfast are better able to concentrate in class. They are more alert and creative, and have even been shown to do better in tests.

The service is available free of charge to children entitled to free school meals while all other children can have a breakfast for 50p. Generally, the service starts 30 minutes before the start of the normal school day.

Councillor Bobby McGill said: "I am delighted that a further three schools are joining the breakfast service. There is plenty of choice for the children and we have worked with dieticians to make sure there is a range of healthy options."

The primary school breakfast comprises:

  • Tea, fresh, chillled semi skimmed milk, hot chocolate (not more than three times a week) or water.
  • Fresh fruit or a glass of pure, unsweetened apple or orange juice
  • A choice of three cereals a day, with semi-skimmed milk.
  • Bread (including wholemeal and fortified white, bagels), toast or a roll with butter and a choice of jam, honey or cheese.

Children who skip breakfast are twice as likely to be overweight as children who eat breakfast. Skipping breakfast only leaves them hungry later in the day and more likely to eat an unhealthy snack.
