A new initiative making it easier and less expensive for pupils to use a computer at home is being launched today (Thursday).

Menstrie Primary School pupil James Dodds will be the first child in the county to be presented with a copy of a Community@Home licence.

Clackmannanshire Council is the second local authority in Scotland to buy into the Community@Home scheme. All primary schools in Clackmannanshire have Textease Studio Plus as their core software, which until now has only been available for home use at a cost of £199 per licence.

Now that Clackmannanshire has bought a Community@Home licence from operators Softease, all teachers, non-teaching staff and pupils in all of the county's 19 primary schools and Fairfield and Lochies Schools can have a licence for use of the software at home.

You are invited to send a photographer to the Click Centre, Alloa, today (Thursday) at 4pm when James will be presented with his copy of the licence by a representative of Softease who are hosting a Twilight Roadshow in the Centre.

Councillor Brian Fearon, Convener of the Learning and Leisure Committee said: "Information technology plays an ever increasing role in our children's education and many more families now have a PC at home. Many parents have expressed the wish to use the same software in the home as their child does at school, but the £199 price tag has been prohibitive until now.

"The Community@Home initiative will bring benefits to children and staff alike and I'm sure it will prove popular."
