Wooden Art for Dollar

When Council officers had to fell a dangerous 180 year old chestnut tree in Dollar last year they were keen to leave something of the tree behind for local people to enjoy.

So Council architects and arts people have come up with the idea of carving the two metre stump into a sculpture that will become a landmark within the popular hillfoots village.

Colin Hamilton, Architectural Project Leader said: "This chestnut tree at Burnside has been part of the dollar landscape for 150 years or more. Its condition was such that we had to cut it down in the interests of public safety, but none of us takes any pleasure in removing such a fantastic tree.

"So we came up with the idea of asking a wood carver to turn what remains of the tree into a sculpture for all of the locals to enjoy."

And to encourage the community to play their part, the Council is asking local schools and residents to say what they would like the sculpture to look like.

The local Community Council is also helping with the project, and Community Council Chairman Charles Bell is delighted to be involved. He said: "Not only will this magnificent tree have a permanent visible memorial but the few sections of timber recovered will be cut and incorporated into the new rustic designed visitor centre and toilet facility. A good example of environmental recycling and conservation of resources which will enhance the appearance of the town."

Posters have been sent to local schools and posted around local shops, asking people for their ideas. The successful design will be carved into the tree over the spring.

Rosa McPherson, Arts Development Officer said: "We want local school children and local people to feel inspired and give us their ideas for the wood carving. It's a great shame the tree had to be cut down, but by carving a sculpture from it something of the spirit of the tree will be allowed to remain.

"This demonstrates our commitment to public art and where it is designed by the public that's even better."

The closing date for submissions is Friday April 1st.

Any suggestions should be sent to: Rosa McPherson, Arts Co-ordinator, Limetree House, Alloa.
