Three Weekly Green Bin Collection Starts in August

Clackmannanshire residents will begin to receive their new collection calendar and recycling information booklet next week explaining that three weekly green bin collection will start in August. Only the green bin will move to three weekly collection, with blue bin collection remaining as two weekly and the blue box, textile bag and food caddy collected weekly.

Residents are being urged to check their calendar carefully. Although it is only the green bin collection that is changing to three weekly, it is likely that both the green bin collection day and the recycling collection day could be on different days from current arrangements.

Residents will be reminded to start using their new calendar by a tag that will be placed on their bin. The new 3 weekly green bin collection cycle starts on Monday 15th August and residents are reminded to place their bin or box and food caddy out for collection by 7:00 am on its new collection day.

Clackmannanshire's waste services are designed to adapt to the personal needs of households, and in situations where residents find their bin capacity no longer meets their needs, for example due to size of household, nappy use or medical needs then assistance will be given.

Full details of the new collections will be provided in the information booklet that will be delivered to all households, and will also be available on Clacksweb. Anyone who needs further information can call the Council on 01259 450000 or email customerservice@clacks.gov.uk

The Council agreed last year to the change to three weekly green bin collection. Since 2008, Clackmannanshire residents have helped to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill by one third. Having less waste in green bins means bin lorries are not full at the end of the working day, and this means the process is not cost effective. The change to three weekly collections helps to make the service more efficient and provide best value.

Clackmannanshire is not the first council to make this change. The experiences of other councils who have made similar changes identified an increase in recycling when they moved to three weekly green bin collection.

Research shows that where a household participates effectively with recycling services, this will result in a residual waste disposal cost of approximately £28.17 per property per annum. A household that does not participate effectively costs £41.77 in waste disposal cost, a difference of £13.60.

Clackmannanshire Council is committed to offering every householder a reliable recycling and waste collection service that contributes to the national recycling targets set out in Scotland's Zero Waste Plan of reaching 60% of household waste recycled by 2020. Over the year 2015 Clackmannanshire Council recycled and recovered 58% of its household waste, continuing the Council's trend of being nationally recognised as a high performer.
