New posters carrying the names of Clackmannanshire communities and highlighting the issue of littering and the fines that can be issued will appear on bus shelters across the county in the coming weeks.

The posters are part of a high profile national litter campaign centred around 'A Dirty Secret', and are funded by Zero Waste Scotland. The campaign which has been running in national media, has colourful family and friends characters highlighting their disgust at catching their loved ones littering.

The aim of the posters is to encourage people in local communities in Clackmannanshire to support the National Litter Strategy and highlight the increase in the Litter Fixed Penalty Notice from £50 to £80. This increase follows public consultation which backed tougher penalties for those who don't bin their waste.

By giving the posters a local branding, the Council hopes this will make the campaign even more relevant to residents who will identify with the message of "A Dirty Secret" appearing in national media.

Enterprise and Environment Convener Donald Balsillie said: "An important factor on how people view and judge the quality of an area as a place to live, work and visit is the amount of litter or rather absence of it in our streets and countryside. The Council is committed to making Clackmannanshire better and has placed a priority on tackling those people who do not respect their environment or themselves by dropping litter in our beautiful county. Significant fines of £80 will now be issued to those who don't bin their litter or take it home.

"This anti social activity and the impact on the cleanliness and economic well-being of Clackmannanshire is an important issue, which we are determined to tackle. These posters will be appearing in a number of local communities and I'd urge everyone to do their part to reduce littering in your area."
