Residents of Clackmannanshire are being encouraged to support Lesotho & St Kitts and Nevis, as well as Scotland, during the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, as part of a national 'Support a 2nd Team' initiative.

The Queen's Baton Relay passed through Lesotho at the weekend, on day 123 of its 288-day journey around the Commonwealth nations and territories, ahead of the Opening Ceremony in Glasgow in July 2014.

While in Lesotho, the Baton was raised for photographs, alongside a banner supporting Clackmannanshire. In return, pupils at Alva Academy, were photographed holding a banner supporting Lesotho.

The event was part of the 'Support a 2nd Team' programme, a series of events to develop links and partnerships between Commonwealth regions, by supporting other countries participating in the Games. Our primary and secondary schools and community groups are being encouraged to develop international links and educational programmes linked to Lesotho & St Kitts and Nevis; and to support competing athletes of their 2nd team.

Lesotho was nation number 38 of the 70 nations and territories that the Queen's Baton Relay will visit. The country is known as the 'Mountain Kingdom' due to the fact that the lowest ground level altitude, lies above 1,000 metres. Lesotho, was the second last country that will be visited on the African continent before the Baton heads out to sea to the Americas.

Clackmannanshire has also been connected with St Kitts and Nevis as part of the 'Support a 2nd Team' programme. The Queen's Baton Relay will arrive there on 27th March.

The Queens Baton Relay will arrive in Clackmannanshire on 25th June

Provost Tina Murphy said: "The Support a 2nd Team programme provides an opportunity, as part of the wider Games Legacy, for creating partnerships with countries participating in the Commonwealth Games and supporting them through their journey to the Games and beyond. Local people and partners are being encouraged to get behind Lesotho and St Kitts and Nevis and cheer them on."
