Recycling publicityClackmannanshire Council residents are top in Scotland for the percentage of household waste recycled, figures released by the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency have shown.

Figures show that Clackmannanshire households recycled 58.9% of their waste in the year 2012, ahead of the Scottish government target of 50%. Clackmannanshire was also amongst the most improved council areas, recycling 7% more waste than the year before.

Environment Convener Donald Balsillie said: "I am delighted by these figures, showing that households in Clackmannanshire are both reducing their waste and recycling more. Our residents should be congratulated for working in partnership with the council to make a real effort to ensure that their household waste is reduced and reused as much as possible and recycling most of what's left. Reducing waste and recycling boosts the Clackmannanshire economy and supports local jobs. Sending valuable resources to landfill is environmentally damaging.

"I would like to encourage everyone in Clackmannanshire to continue to reduce their waste and recycle as much of their remaining waste as they can by using the kerbside collections including food waste caddies, and community recycling facilities. Anybody who needs more information or advice on recycling can use Clacksweb or phone the Customer Contact Centre on 450000."
