Special Olympians Return with Haul of Medals

Local athletes excelled themselves at the 9th Special Olympics National Summer Games which was held in the City of Bath.

The Forth Valley team's medal haul reached 47 medals, including 9 gold, 5 silver and 1 bronze medals achieved by the 10 athletes from Clackmannanshire.

Prior to their departure, the team was given a super send-off from Grangemouth Sports Complex, receiving the best wishes of Provost Tina Murphy of Clackmannanshire, Provost Mike Robbins of Stirling and Provost Pat Reid of Falkirk on behalf of their home counties.

Congratulating the team on their success, Provost Murphy said: "The excitement levels were sky high as the athletes left for Bath. I am delighted at the team's success - what an experience to return home with a medal. Their parents and their whole community is proud of each of them on their achievements. My special congratulations go to the Clackmannanshire athletes and their haul of 15 medals. I hope they all enjoyed the event and no doubt are already looking forward to the next competition."

Fifty athletes aged 12 to 50 years of age from Falkirk, Stirling and Clackmannanshire represented Forth Valley in the Special Olympics National Summer Games which is a competition for people with learning disabilities and is organised by Special Olympics GB.

The local athletes competed against 1700 athletes from all over the UK in athletics, boccia, football, golf, and swimming.
