Local primary school pupils were given a preview of one of the Commonwealth Games venues as part of the Wee County Bowls Project.

The programme, managed by EventScotland, forms a key part of the Scottish Government's commitment to deliver a lasting legacy as a result of the Commonwealth Games coming to Scotland.

On Monday 72 primary school pupils representing the clubs of Dollar, Alloa East End, Alloa, Tillicoultry, Menstrie, Clackmannan, Alva and Alva South, travelled to Glasgow.

The primary school children got the chance to compete in a lawn bowls competition at the Kelvingrove Greens in Glasgow, the greens which will host the 2014 Commonwealth Games bowls events.

The Wee County Bowls project has been run by the Clackmannanshire Bowls Forum for past two years. The pupils from P5/6/7 have been learning their skills in the after-school clubs.

Three buses transported the pupils from Alloa to Glasgow with all players receiving a commemorative medal and participation certificate courtesy of Event Scotland. The winners shield went to a team of four from Clackmannan: Stephanie Davies, Piper Hislop, Jodi Hall and Lindsay-Jane Fowler.

Education, Sport and Leisure Convener, Councillor Ellen Forson said: "I would like to thank Bowls Scotland, who were instrumental in arranging this prestigious venue for Clackmannanshire's young people. I would also like to thank the many volunteers in our bowling clubs who escorted the pupils to Kelvingrove.

"Some pupils had their own small bowls but as a result of grant applications supported by the Council , bowls for small hands were supplied to the pupils."

The event also allowed for some connections to be made between the Clackmannanshire clubs and Glasgow clubs which it is anticipated will lead to local pupils being able to spectate at next year's Games.

Ricky Taylor, Sport Team Manager for Lawn Bowls in Scotland also took time out to visit the event on Monday and encourage the young Clackmannanshire bowlers.

Councillor Forson added: "I would also like to thank Colin Blake of Alloa East End Bowling club for organising the teams and the ties. There are a few bowling clubs who have not joined the Clackmannanshire Bowls Forum yet and if they want more information they can contact the Council."

Clackmannanshire Bowls Forum is looking for more clubs to join. If your interested in joining the partnership, please contact on 01259 450000.

Clackmannanshire Council Bowls Forum will be sponsoring a Generation Triples event on Sunday, 18th August at Alva Bowling Club, with an 11am start. It is also part of the Commonwealth Festival of Sport and Dance.

The Generation Cup will be contested by one unior under-18 player and two adults, with the junior player playing second. There will be medals and prizes for all entrants. The entry fee is only £4.50 per triple and there will be refreshments available throughout the day.
