Ladywell Nursery is to be renamed St Serf's Primary School Nursery Class.

The decision was agreed by Council today followed a formal consultation between October and December last year. The consultation involved a proposal to change Ladywell Nursery from a stand-alone nursery to a nursery class of St Serf's Primary.

The Parent Council and children in St Serf's Primary School were consulted and were very positive about the merger.

Managing nurseries and primary schools together makes the move from nursery to school easier for children and supports continuity of learning for 3-6 year olds. The Council has already moved two nurseries into nursery classes within primary schools and inspections have shown that the quality of early years education has been sustained and built on.

This change will keep the number of nursery places the same and keep the same staff. The nursery will remain in its current building and be managed by the head teacher of St Serf's Primary. Some work will be carried out to the school's perimeter fence to create an easy and safe access between the buildings.

Education Convenor Councillor Ellen Forson, said "Ladywell Nursery has an excellent reputation and already works closely with St Serf's Primary School. Changing the nursery to become St Serf's Primary School Nursery Class will allow us to build on this good work with the same dedicated staff, supporting improved transition for children moving from nursery to primary education."

The change will take effect from 28th June 2013.
