Workers' Memorial Day 2013Clackmannanshire Council led tributes to commemorate International Workers' Memorial Day on Monday.

Workers' Memorial Day is an international day of remembrance for workers killed, disabled, injured or made unwell by their work. It took place on Monday 29th April. It was an opportunity to highlight the preventable nature of most workplace accidents and ill health, and to support campaigns that promote improvements in workplace safety.

Depute Provost Donald Balsillie, leading the tributes, said: "This is an opportunity to highlight and support the campaigns that promote improvements in workplace safety, and to remember those workers killed, disabled or injured. We should also bear in mind all of the families affected."

A memorial was unveiled outside Greenfield House four years ago and this year's commemoration took place at the memorial, where a wreath was laid at 11am by Depute Provost Balsille and Trades Union representative Pamela Robertson of Unison.

Depute Provost Balsillie delivered a speech, followed by a speech by Chief Executive Elaine McPherson. There were also speeches from Mrs Robertson, MP Gordon Banks and MSP Keith Brown. This was be followed by be a minutes' silence and the flags at Alloa Town Hall were lowered to half mast throughout the day as a mark of respect.
