It is with great sadness and regret that we announce the passing this week of Dr Alf Martin, Clackmannanshire's Citizen of the Year in 2008.

Dr Martin was one of the founding members of Alloa Community Enterprises, one of Scotland's oldest established community recycling businesses. ACE was founded for "the relief of poverty by the alleviation of unemployment" and achieves its objectives by being involved in environmental activities, particularly recycling.

Leading the tributes, Provost Tina Murphy said: "It is a huge loss to the whole of Clackmannanshire. Dr Martin was a remarkable man, who contributed immensely to the county in so many ways, through helping to create so many jobs, regeneration and recycling. He was a very worthy winner of our Citizen of the Year Award five years ago, and I remember so well at the time how proud he was to receive it, not just for himself but for the whole of the ACE board and the entire workforce.

"Our thoughts, at this very sad time, are with his family."

Dr Martin served as a volunteer director with ACE for 25 years and retired from the position of chairman in late 2009, although he remained as a board director. He was succeeded as chairman by the current Lord Lieutenant Sir George Reid.

Dr Martin was named as Clackmannanshire's Citizen of the Year in 2008 and was presented with his prestigious honour by the then Lord Lieutenant Sheena Cruickshank.

He won the award for outstanding contribution to local regeneration, employment creation and recycling.

Malcolm Macardle, Managing Director of ACE, said: "The Board and staff are deeply saddened by his death and have passed on our condolences to his widow and family.

"He was an inspirational individual whose vision, combined with tireless work, helped create and sustain ACE which has been pivotal in creating significant numbers of long term jobs, training placements and supported employment opportunities in Clackmannanshire."

Dr Martin passed away on the 23rd April, having been ill for some time and had been in hospital since early March.

The family are holding a private funeral and have requested no flowers or cards.
