Fairtrade Fortnight in Clackmannanshire gets underway, with an African cookery demonstration and tasting taking centre stage.
African Kitchen: Savour the Flavour will be a cookery demonstration and tasting which will give people the opportunity to find out how to use Fairtrade products in African-inspired recipes.
It will take place on Tuesday 5th March at 7.30pm in the Resonate Arts House, Units A3 & A4, North Castle Street, Alloa. The event is free, but bookings should be made in advance by contacting Carol Donaldson at carol.donaldson@co-operative.coop or telephone 0141 304 5586. The event has been organised by the Clackmannanshire Fairtrade Steering Group, with support and funding from the Co-operative.
Resonate will also be hosting an exhibition of the entries in this year's Clackmannanshire schools' Fairtrade art competition. The winners will be presented with their prizes on the Tuesday night.
Other highlights of Fairtrade Fortnight include the visit of Roberto Recinos of Fedecocagua, a co-operative of coffee growers from Guatemala, who is visiting Alva's Co-op store on 5th March at 11.00. He will be there as a part of a national tour.
No 140, Alva's Fairtrade Shop at 140, Stirling Street, Alva will see the first screening in central Scotland of The People & The Olive from 2pm on Friday, 1st March.
The film features the daily struggles and joys of olive growers across Palestine, played out as a group of ultra marathoners run the 129 miles from Hebron to Jenin in five days. While running this course, they plant olive trees, displaying hope for the future of this agricultural area on the West Bank.
Among the guests at the screening of the film will be Taysir Arbasi, the Palestinian director of Fair Trade importer, Zaytoun, who is also visiting Alva during Fairtrade Fortnight. More information about this event is available from John Lamond, by email at john@johnlamond.com.
Clackmannanshire's Fairtrade Champion, Provost Tina Murphy said: "I would encourage as many people as possible to come along to the fantastic array of events which the Steering Group have arranged to promote Fairtrade products, and at the same time learn more about what Fairtrade is all about."
Local steering group chairman Mr Lamond added: " The wide variety of Fairtrade activities across Clackmannanshire during this year's Fairtrade Fortnight merely demonstrates how closely the people of the Wee County relate with the heart of the campaign and we on the Steering Group are pleased that we have been able to highlight just some of the producers who engage with Fairtrade."
