Lornshill Academy has enjoyed a successful 'Health Week' which ran from 25th February through until 1st March.

Convener of Education, Sport and Leisure, Councillor Ellen Forson, said: "The 'Health Week' had several aims - to raise pupils' awareness of their own health, the health of the community and the nation, to gain a deeper understanding of health, to enhance what people understand 'Health and Wellbeing' to mean, and to raise money for a defibrillator, charities and school funds."

The school organised a theme for each day and a song to fit in with the theme. There were also events organised each day for pupils in the school to be involved in.

The S1 and S2 pupils have worked hard through their lessons to plan and organise this event.

The themes and events organised for each day were:

Medical Monday from 10am until 12 noon when they focussed on the health of the community and how the emergency services contribute to this. There was a demonstration of a defibrillator, as this is what the pupils are raising money for. Representatives from police, ambulance and the fire also gave a talk about their experiences with using the
defibrillator and the importance of having one in the school.

On Tasty Tuesday between 1.30pm and 3pm the focus was on healthy foods and promoting healthier choices. Pupils were also encouraged to bring in food to contribute to the Alloa Foodbank.

Throughout World Wednesday the spotlight turned on health and how it can improve the environment. The school had a 'No litter lunchtime', and a focussed on energy saving by turning off all unnecessary lights and computers.

On Thoughtful Thursday between the S4,5,6 pupils will examined psychological health. An education psychologist talked to the pupils about exam stress and stress relief. Parents and staff also came along to the Assembly hall to visit various stalls both about stress relief and relaxation and also general psychological health charities.

The Health Week concluded with Physical Friday when the spotlight fell on improving physical health. There was a sports bazaar in the afternoon, where all the school sports clubs were represented at a stall, trying to encourage participation and also giving pupils information about training times and how to join.

To co-incide with Health Week two of the school's former pupils who now play for the Scottish rugby team, Grant Gilchrist and Sean Kennedy, are coming in to do a bit of rugby training with young people.
