An appeal to the people of Clackmannanshire was launched yesterday (25 August) inviting them to become members of their local Children's Panel.
The search is on for individuals aged 18 - 60, male or female from the Clackmannanshire area, who have an interest in the welfare of young people.
Chairman of the Joint Children's Panel Advisory Committee (which oversees appointment of members for the area), Peter Ward, said: 'Becoming a member of the Children's Panel will ensure that young people in difficult circumstances have a real chance of regaining control of their lives.'
'We are appealing for volunteers to find out more about what it means to be a Panel member and just how they can help young people. Our members come from all walks of life but above all, they have the interest of the young person at heart.'
'Experience of life is the only qualification needed and a full training scheme is available before you sit on the Panel. In particular, we're looking for men to come forward as they tend to be underrepresented on the Panel.'
'Young people in Clackmannanshire are grateful for the efforts and enthusiasm shown by members in the past - we need that to continue this year and we urgently need local men and women to step forward and give a little of their time which can mean a great deal to a young person in trouble.' Young people can be brought before a Children's Hearing for many reasons such as being beyond parental or carer control; in moral danger; having been physically, emotionally or sexually abused; having offended or truanted.
Panel members' expenses such as child-care and travel will be met and you may be eligible for a contribution towards loss of earnings when you are taking part in Children's Panel work.
An informal information evening is being held in Falkirk's Municipal Buildings on Thursday 11 September 2003 from 7pm onwards. Existing Panel members will be on hand to talk about their work and give a practical insight into their work. Refreshments will be served.
