The modern burgh of Alloa turns 150 next year and will be marked by bringing the past into the present with a two-day Victorian themed event.

The event to be held over on 21/22 May 2004 will celebrate the creation of the modern burgh of Alloa in 1854 - the same year the Burgh Police Force was established.

The event will be held at historic Alloa Tower and the new Parliament Walk - which itself links the modern day to the historic tower which can be traced back to the 1300s.

Funding of £3,000 to cover initial costs was approved at this week's council meeting although it is hoped that additional funding can be secured through sponsorship.

Councillor Margaret Paterson, Leader of the Council said: "Next year marks the birth of the modern Burgh of Alloa with plans already afoot to celebrate this wonderful anniversary. A working group has already met to discuss how best to take forward plans."

The local tourist board, Central Scotland Police, council officers, Alloa Tower, the local tourism association and Clackmannanshire Leisure are all on board. A range of activities is already being considered. They include:·A Victorian Fair·A Victorian carousel·Street entertainment involving local drama groups·Musical events·Ghost walks·Spinning and weaving demonstrations·A number of events for children

Detailed proposals will be presented to Council in the near future for approval.

Councillor Paterson added: "The event will be promoted far and wide via the local tourist board publications. So in addition to putting on a cracking event for local people to enjoy we hope to attract large numbers of tourists and visitors to the area which will have an impact on the local economy."
