Clackmannanshire Council has welcomed the news that ScotRail express trains will offer free wifi by the end of December 2013.

Transport Scotland has committed £2m to fund the installation of wifi equipment on all 59 of their 'class 170' trains. This fleet operates between most Scottish cities and in the Fife and Stirling areas.

And among the services which will bit fitted with the new wifi equipment is the Glasgow/Edinburgh - Stirling/Alloa services.

Clackmannanshire Council's Enterprise and Environment Convener, Councillor Donald Balsillie, welcoming the announcement, said: "More journeys are made on the class 170's than any other of our trains, so it makes sense to begin the roll-out on this fleet. It will prove of enormous benefit for commuters from Alloa to Stirling and through to Glasgow. It will be especially useful for businessmen in the ever increasing technology these days of iPads and laptops."

From March 2013 the number of wifi trains in passenger service will steadily increase, at a rate of five or six each month.

ScotRail will be fitting wifi during planned weekend maintenance to avoid taking trains out of service.
