The annual Clackmannanshire Secondary schools Cross Country Championships took place this week at Cochrane Park, Alva, with over 100 runners competing.

A total of128 pupils from Alva Academy, Alloa Academy and Lornshill Academy took part in six events according to age and gender.

The course was very wet and had to be adjusted at short notice to accommodate the weather. The overall winning school was Alva Academy.

Despite a very poor weather outlook the event proved to be extremely competitive and exciting, although runners left the event very muddy and wet.

Education, Sport and Leisure Convenor, Councillor Ellen Forson, said: "I believe the atmosphere was great with pupils cheering each other along and encouraging even those last across the finish line. There were some excellent performances and some close finishes. I would like to congratulate not just all the winners and those who collected medals, but all the runners for taking part in what were very trying conditions."

This event is a qualifier for the Forth Valley Schools Cross Country event. This year it will be hosted by Falkirk Council at Callander Park on 8th March, 2013.

From the Clackmannanshire Championships the top 20 S1/2 girls, S1/2 boys, S3/4 girls, S3/4 boys, S5/6 girls and S5/6 boys will represent Clackmannanshire.

Councillor Forson added: "Sincere thanks must go to all the secondary schools, school staff and parents for bringing the children and cheering competitors along.. Many thanks also go to Sports development staff for the set up and organising of the event and to Young Ambassadors who assisted with marshalling."
