The annual Clackmannanshire Primary Schools Sports Association (CPSSA) Swimming Gala was held at Alloa Leisure Bowl last Friday.

The event, run by Clackmannanshire Sports Development department with support from Alloa Swimming Club and Alloa Leisure Bowl, proved to be a resounding success.

Convener of Clackmannanshire Council's Education, Sport and Leisure Committee, Councillor Ellen Forson, said: "It was a great event with over 115 children from 14 primary schools across the region taking part.

"The atmosphere I believe was electric, with great encouragement from spectators, school staff and pupils. I would like to congratulate everyone who organised the event, took part, and of course the winners."

Competitors swam through heats in individual events and relays to reach the finals and challenge for the winning places.

All swimmers who reached the finals received points for their school, accumulation of these points determined the team trophy winning school.

The relay events were very exciting in the heats stage, with guest swimmers Jamie Marshall and Joanna Petrie from Alloa Swimming Club racing alongside the relay teams.

The pupils swam a 4x25m Freestyle relay with Jamie and Joanna swimming a 100m Individual Medley with the boys teams and girls teams respectively.

Councillor Forson added: "I understand the standard of swimming was fantastic with some very close finishes from both club swimmers and non club swimmers."

The overall winning school was Strathdevon Primary School with 41 points, second place was St. John's Primary School with 34 points and third was Tillicoultry Primary School with 25 points.

Garry Dallas, Clackmannanshire Council's Director of Services to Communities, came along, supported the gala and kindly presented the medals and the team trophy.

Special thanks also go to Alloa Amateur Swimming Club, Joanna Petrie, Jamie Marshall, Alloa Leisure Bowl staff and Eleanor McGlashan for their support and help at the event.
