Clackmannanshire Council is set to take on its first New Deal placements - up to five for the next twenty six weeks - as part of a pilot Waste Management Project.

The pilot scheme - the first of its kind locally - will provide work place training for young people in the Environmental sector, which is set to grow over the coming years.

And it expected that more opportunities will become available as Councils nationally set out to meet government waste targets.

Councillor Billy Calder, Convener of the Enterprise and Environment Committee said: "This is an innovative project which will provide excellent work place experience for up to five trainees while providing a valuable service to local communities."

Trainees will gain real work experience in five different work areas including recycling, waste centre operations, customer care and cleansing management. And the programme will offer trainees the following benefits:·An individual training plan·Job seeker and other related support provided by employment project New Approaches·Early access to council jobs as an incentive to complete the scheme·A guaranteed interview to be part of a casual pool of staff

"This is the first time that we have created New Deal training opportunities within the Council itself," added Councillor Calder. "Providing training opportunities to local people through the Waste Management Project means that local people will have a better chance of securing future jobs which will most certainly become available in the waste management sector."
