Primary Schools Athletics Championships

Clackmannanshire primary school pupils have got Olympics fever and took the chance to display their athletics skills at the annual Primary Schools Athletics Championships at Grangemouth Stadium on Tuesday 22nd May.

All 19 local primary schools were represented with over 700 participants, staff, helpers, officials and organisers. In total an amazing 15 new records were set, among mainstream and ASN competitors.

Just to add to the occasion, the stadium was decorated throughout with London 2012 material.

All schools had chosen an Olympic country to represent at the event and were welcomed by pipers from the Alloa and Bowmar Pipe Band and paraded round the track before taking their places in the stand.

The opening ceremony consisted of an Olympic Torch Relay with athlete Rebecca Watson running with a simulated torch through a guard of honour to release coloured balloons to mark the start of the event.

Guests at the event, who helped to present medals and trophies included Lorna Jackson, partnership manager for Sportscotland, Ashley Oswald regional manager for Scottish Athletics, Provost Tina Murphy and Alan Milliken assistant Head of Education for Clackmannanshire and Stirling Council.

Head of Education, Belinda Greer, said: " The performances of the athletes was of a very high standard with the quality of their technical ability noted by many. In particular, the top 6 performers in the P6 girls high jump all broke the previous record, a record that had stood since 2005."

The trophy for the boys Overall Best Performance was won by Sam Fisher, P6 from Tillicoultry Primary School for his brilliant performance in the High Jump, managing a height of 1m 34cm, breaking the previous record by an impressive 12cm, a record that had stood for seven years.

The Overall Best Performance trophy for the girls was presented to Megan Wood, P7 of Park Primary School for her outstanding record breaking performance in the Turbo Javelin, throwing 18m 70 cm.

The trophy for the Overall Best School went to Tillicoultry Primary school with Alva Primary School coming in a close second. Third place went to Sunnyside Primary School and the Small School Trophy was won by St.Bernadette's Primary.
