St Serf's Primary School concluded a fortnight of Olympic Games celebrations in style.

During the past two weeks children at the school enjoyed an Olympic Challenge and had the opportunity to walk three laps of the top footpath of the grounds.

The children, during the first week, did this with their class and teacher, and in the second week they did it as part of their playtime or lunchtime.

All of the children successfully completed the walks each, a total of three miles during the fortnight.

Head teacher, Carolyne McDaid said: "The children had a fabulous fortnight learning about Olympics past and present and had the opportunity to meet and work with elite athletes and competitors.

"We encouraged the whole school to take part in the Olympic Challenge walk including staff and parents, and we walked further than we had originally planned. Such was the success of the walk that the children have suggested we make it a weekly event with a Walk on Wednesday.

"It will go a long way to improving our health, fitness and wellbeing."

The fortnight ended with an Olympic Games Day on Thursday 17th May, which included an Opening Ceremony, their very own Olympic torch, the swearing of the Olympic oath, and the parade of national teams before declaring the games open.

The whole event will also replace the school's annual Sports Day.

On Friday 18th May, the Parent Council held a sponsored Olympathon when the children took part in a range of fun activities on an Olympic theme, including sports and ball games, crafts, an Olympic rings treasure hunt and a snack stop.

School dinners were also be adapted during the fortnight, with themed days such as an Italian Day with pizza or spaghetti bolognaise on the menu, a UK Day featuring scotch pie or haggis and a USA Day when burger and hot dogs will be served up.
