Clackmannanshire Council has welcomed confirmation that the Speirs Centre is to receive a building repair grant from Historic Scotland for £435,000.
The funding was announced today by Cabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs Fiona Hyslop.
Last month planning permission was granted for the Council's £2.9 million plans to create a modern library at the Speirs Centre.
The Category 'A' listed building is one of Clackmannanshire's most historic landmarks and the Council's plans ensure a positive future for the centre.
The project will see the restoration of the buildings historic fabric and features, contributing to the regeneration of Alloa Town Centre. The project will see the Speirs Centre converted into a modern library facility, with a new ramped access, main entrance and lifts.
The building will also accommodate a local family history centre and a visitor information point.
Welcoming the funding announcement, Head of Facilities Management Stephen Crawford, said; "We're delighted that Historic Scotland has given the Speirs Centre project a significant building repair grant, which reinforces the merits of our ambitious plans for the building. Our plans will maximise the use of this historically important, but underused, building, securing its future use."
Work on the Speirs Centre is due to begin in summer 2012.
