Clackmannanshire Council has become the latest Scottish local authority to sign up to WWF's Earth Hour 2012 and is now encouraging local residents, businesses and other organisations to register to take part as well.
At 8.30pm on Saturday 31st March Clackmannanshire Council will join thousands across Scotland and millions across the globe in switching off their lights for 60 minutes in a graphic demonstration of support for people and wildlife threatened by climate change.
Last year millions of people in 135 countries worldwide took part in WWF's Earth Hour. Some of world's most recognisable landmarks went dark including the Sydney Opera House, the Eiffel Tower and the Pyramids of Giza.
Across Scotland almost 500 schools joined hundreds of businesses, organisations and community groups for the big switch off. On the night people celebrated Earth Hour with candle-lit meals, topical film screenings, torch-lit walks, pub quizzes and even a game of night golf. WWF is hoping for even more fun and innovative ideas this year. To register for this year's event please visit: www.wwfscotland.org.uk/earthhour
This is the fourth year that Clackmannanshire Council has participated in Earth Hour and to show our support we will be switching off the floodlights on Alloa Town Hall, as well as switching off the lights at Greenfield House and Kilncraigs. The floodlights at Castle Campbell in Dollar will also be switched off.
Dr Richard Dixon, Director of WWF Scotland said: "It is great news Clackmannanshire Council has given its backing once again to WWF's Earth Hour 2012. Already it's looking to be another great year with communities up and down the country joining together with others from around the world in a dramatic hour of action on climate change.
"WWF's Earth Hour is a simple way for people to show their support for strong action on climate change. Clackmannanshire's decision to join WWF's Earth Hour highlights their commitment to this issue. We hope lots of individuals, community groups and local organisations feel inspired to take part too."
Councillor Eddie Carrick, Sustainability Portfolio Holder, said: "Earth Hour is the world's greatest climate change event and I'm delighted that Clackmannanshire Council will once again show our support for this world wide movement. This symbolic action is a reminder about how we depend on the Earth for food, fuel, water and fresh air. It's not about an hour of darkness, it's about a brighter future! I would also like to encourage staff and local residents to sign up and take part in Earth Hour. This is an opportunity to raise awareness of the energy we use, to seek ways to reduce our demand and to move to low carbon sources. By switching off the lights for Earth Hour, Clackmannanshire Council is cutting its greenhouse gas emissions, and we continue to work with local communities and businesses to reduce theirs."
