There has been a dramatic rise in attainment in pupils' writing across schools in the Wee County.

The Council's Learning and Leisure Committee (29 January) also heard that levels of attainment in reading and maths have greatly improved since 1998.

At this time all primary schools in Scotland had to set three year targets for attainment in reading, writing and maths for 2001, with further targets set for June 2002. Clackmannanshire's rate of overall progress from 1998 to June 2001 was the best among its comparator authorities - and within the top 25% of all Scottish local authorities.

Councillor Alison Lindsay, Convener of Learning and Leisure Committee said: "Excellent progress has been made in raising attainment levels in our primary schools.

"The fact that primary school attainment in Clackmannanshire has steadily improved since the introduction of target setting is due to the determined efforts of staff, parents and pupils in all schools. I am delighted that many of the developments introduced to raise levels of attainment in Clackmannanshire schools are now beginning to produce measurable results in national terms."

Since 1998 attainment levels in all three areas have risen.·An increase of 75% in writing·An increase 39% in reading·An increase of 21% in maths

Schools set further three year targets in October 2002 to build on the considerable successes in local primary schools.

Sandy Wilson, Head of Education and Lifelong Learning said: "We are very pleased with these results but we are not complacent and will continue to build on them to ensure that all of our pupils get the best education possible."

The comparator authorities are East Ayrshire, North Ayrshire, North Lanarkshire, Falkirk, West Lothian, North Lanarkshire.

Members of the comparator group were determined by comparing a number of statistical measures from a range of educational and economic indicators such as free meal entitlement and rates of employment.
