Fishcross Primary School will find out soon whether it has achieved Rights Respecting School status.

Bruce Wilkinson, education officer for UNICEF in Scotland, will visit the school on Tuesday 27th September to assess whether the school has attained Level 1 Rights Respecting School status.

You are invited to send a photographer to the school at 11.45am on 27th September.

The school has been working towards the award since September last year and since then a range of learning and teaching activities have been undertaken to raise awareness of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which is at the heart of the award.

A different 'right' was assigned to each month of the year with each class working on activities pertinent to that 'right' throughout the year.

Whole school activities have included a shoe box appeal in December, taking part in the Day of Change in February and the Mary's Meals initiative in June, when pupils donated backpacks and filled them with stationery for children in Africa.

National research has shown that the Rights Respecting Schools award can benefit children in a number of ways including improving their overall wellbeing, improving academic performance and enabling children to improve personal relationships. It has also helped to promote and encourage positive behaviour.
