The latest weapon in the Councils bid to clean up the County and keep it litter free is a team of three known as - the Fast Response Team.

More than £30,000 has been invested to create the new team who over the past two months has been clearing roadside verges of litter and illegal dumping from many areas throughout the County.

Early results show that the majority of rubbish littering the Wee County comes from cars, vans and other vehicles passing through on a daily basis. The Fast Response Team has already found that verges cleared of litter one week are back as bad as ever within a week or so.

Councillor Donald Balsillie, Convener of the Enterprise and Environment Committee said: "We can only reduce the extent of this problem with the co-operation of the public. Our message to the litter louts is - give the local environment a break, take your litter home or put it in the nearest bin.

"We would ask local people to help us keep the local environment clear of rubbish by being extra vigilant. Use our ELSA free phone number or call the Police to report all instances of illicit dumping. Clackmannanshire's environment deserves to be better treated and kept free of litter for everyone's pleasure and enjoyment."

The bulk of roadside litter is made up of:·fast food wrappers·newspapers·cans·polystyrene boxes·drinking cups·pizza boxes.

The Council's Freephone ELSA number is 0500 545 540.
