Lots of local residents came along to the official launch of the Clackmannanshire Doorstep Crime Partnership recently to hear more about what the Partnership has to offer.

The aims of the Partnership are to:

  • Raise awareness of doorstep crime
  • Increase confidence of residents and empower communities
  • Increase physical security of properties
  • Tackle perpetrators of doorstep crime

The Partnership have developed a strong, single message which is: 'Safe and Secure, Open when Sure'

Door stickers have been produced with this message printed on them which are widely available. The aim of the sticker is to act as a reminder to people as they answer their door, and to only answer the door when you are sure of the person who is on your doorstep.

The Clackmannanshire Doorstep Crime Partnership was launched at Parklands, Alva in March. The event was sponsored by The Association of Scottish Neighbourhood Watches and was officially opened by John Gillespie, Head of Community and Regulatory Services at Clackmannanshire Council.

The Partnership has also produced a doorstep advice booklet which contains information on how to feel safe and secure in your home. The booklet aims to inform and empower people, helping them to feel confident in their own home. The booklet also contains contact details for a number of agencies who can offer advice and support in relation to doorstep crime.

John Gillespie said: "The Partnership has only been in place for a few months, but it has already achieved several things including the development of the advice booklet and an electronic exchange of information on doorstep crime incidents amongst partners."

Superintendent Alan Douglas, Chair of Clackmannanshire Community Safety Partnership
also attended the launch and added: "The booklet has been produced by the group and highlights simple steps that can be taken to avoid becoming the victim of doorstep crime, whilst also providing useful local contact details."

At this time of year people's mind are now turning to gardening and repairs to property and it is important to be cautious about agreeing to buy goods or services on your doorstep or allowing people you don't know into your home. If you are suspicious about anyone that calls at your door then you should report it to the Police or Trading Standards.

The booklet and sticker are available from libraries and one stop shops or you can obtain one by contacting Stirling and Clackmannanshire Trading Standards on 01786 443322.

The Clackmannanshire Doorstep Crime Partnership involves Clackmannanshire Council's Trading Standards Team, Central Scotland Police, Care and Repair, Age Scotland and a number of Community Councils.
