Don't be the weakest link! Say goodbye to litter

Cut out the litter - that's the message from the Council's Street Cleaning Staff this week.

This year, at a time when resources are particularly tight, staff have been drafted in to lift litter from roads and verges throughout Clackmannanshire.

The Council believes it has never had to work so hard collecting litter, and that dumpers and litterers have re-doubled their activities with the amount of material, particularly dumped from cars and commercial vehicles, increasing dramatically.

Material is also being shed from lorries such as polythene and cardboard, fast food containers and shopping bags - even complete newspapers - all strewn along hundreds of yards of roadside.

There are areas which normally require litter picking twice a year which have been picked three times this year already.

Councillor Alexander, the Convener of the Council's Environment & Enterprise Committee said: "At a time when there is so much needing done in Clackmannanshire it is frustrating to spend resources on lifting material that shouldn't be there in the first place. We need zero tolerance of litter and I would commend initiatives such as the "Pride of Place" project to everyone in Clackmannanshire."

Now the Council wants answers to these questions: Who are the dumpers? Who thinks so little of themselves and their community that they are prepared to spoil it? Who thinks that spending more and more money on street cleaning is a good use of public money?

And its message to the litterers is clear - take your litter home with you or stop at the nearest bin.

And to the general public - ditch the dumpers - report instances of littering or illicit dumping to the Police or the Council's ELSA Freephone Number 0500 545 540.
