Clackmannanshire Council's Trading Standards Team is issuing a warning to toy retailers and the public about the dangers of choking on small plastic darts fired by toy guns.
The warning comes after investigations into a toy gun following the death of an 11 year old boy. The outcome of the investigations has resulted in safety standards being modified to require all projectiles with a suction cup to be at least 57 millimetres (21/4 inches) in length to prevent choking. This amendment to the safety standard will be effective from 30th September 2002.
Clackmannanshire residents are advised to destroy any toy that contains a dart shorter than 57mm with a suction cup.
Retailers are advised to remove any non-complaint toys from sale before 30th September and return them to their supplier.
Hugh Hamilton, Trading Standards Team Leader said: "Safety is paramount especially where young children are concerned. I urge Clackmannanshire residents and retailers to take notice of this warning about the choking hazard these toy guns and their darts may represent."
Traders or local residents who wish to obtain further advice should contact Clackmannanshire Trading Standards via the Council's Development and Environmental Services on 01259 452575.
