Buying counterfeit goods in the run up to Christmas may seem like a bargain at the time but can lead to dangerous consequences warns the Stirling Reducing Doorstep Crime Partnership.

And to help highlight the dangers to consumers the Partnership, which includes Stirling and Clackmannanshire Joint Trading Standards Service and Central Scotland Police, is holding a special Anti-Counterfeiting Day, on Thursday September 16, 2010 from 9am to 5pm in Stirling's Thistles Shopping Centre (outside Primark).

During the event representatives from several well-known consumer brands will be on hand to talk to shoppers about the dangers of buying counterfeit goods and to provide practical examples for shoppers to be aware of.

Representatives include:

  • UGG Australia
  • British Phonographic Industry - music
  • Federation Against Copyright Theft - film and video
  • JML - Ped Egg
  • Imperial Tobacco
  • GHD
  • Stirling and Clackmannanshire Trading Standards
  • Central Scotland Police
  • Reducing Doorstep Crime Partnership

As well as advice and information there will be an opportunity to sign up for the Telephone and Mailing preference services.

Rosemary McLellan from Stirling and Clackmannanshire Trading Standards said: "Every year in the lead up to Christmas and the weeks and months that follow we receive complaints from consumers who had thought they were getting a bargain.

"The goods they have bought or the present they received has turned out to be fake. They have bought the goods from doorstep salesmen, off the internet, at their place of work or at car boot sales. And while we know that some of these sellers are genuine many are not and are out to con the public by selling fake items, which lead to disappointment and wasted money. It is important for consumers to be aware of how they might be conned. We would urge shoppers to visit the stands and speak to the experts."
